Philodendron Melanochrysum; Black Gold Philodendron

Height: 75cm

Nursey Pot Diameter: Ø21cm

About the Philodendron Melanochrysum

Philodendron melanochrysum slips from South America’s cloud forests into modern rooms with couture poise. With deep velvet leaves traced in golden veins, Mela brings quiet drama and gallery polish to shelves and slim poles.

She thrives in bright, indirect light and half-shade, preferring an airy aroid mix that drains well; water when the top layer dries, then let excess run. Keep warmth steady, humidity moderate, and leaves dust-free for that satin glow. Low-maintenance by nature yet unmistakably special, she’s both design accent and easy air-refresher.

Delivered in a 21 cm pot around 75 cm tall, she settles fast and keeps unfurling longer blades as support and light improve. Rotate monthly; avoid harsh sun and cold drafts for confident growth indoors.

Did you know?
On trees, melanochrysum can produce leaves longer than your forearm; indoors, staking early encourages larger, elongated hearts while preserving crisp variegation-like veining. Gentle feeding in spring keeps color rich and new leaves broad, velvety, and luminous indoors year-round.

Why the bedroom?

This plant is perfect for the bedroom because it brings instant serenity and tropical charm with minimal effort. Her bold, velvet leaves make a striking statement, while subtly improving the air you breathe. Though she’s not safe for curious pets or children, she’s ideal for stylish, adult-friendly spaces. Low-maintenance, air-cleansing, and full of presence—Mela was made for this room.

Position: Bookshelf or stand

Place Mela near bright, indirect light—beside a sheer-curtained window works perfectly. Stage her on a Bookshelf or stand with a slim moss pole, giving leaves room to elongate. Keep clear of radiators, drafts, and blasting AC. Rotate monthly for balance, and avoid direct sun. As she sizes up, move to a Floor planter with sturdy support for elegant, vertical growth indoors year-round.

Growth Habit: Climbing

Plants that naturally climb trees or other surfaces in the wild.

Soil: Well-Draining

Choose a well-draining, airy aroid mix so Melanochrysum’s roots stay oxygenated yet evenly moist. Blend premium potting soil with chunky perlite, orchid bark, and a touch of coco coir for gentle hold. Avoid dense, peat-heavy blends and standing water. Pot with drainage, water through, then reset—damp, never dense. This breathable structure supports larger leaves, steady growth, and healthy, velvety foliage indoors year-round.

Propagation: Stem Cuttings

Propagate Philodendron melanochrysum by STEM CUTTINGS. Take a 10–12 cm tip cutting just above a node, keeping 1–2 nodes and a leaf. Remove the lowest leaf, then root the node in moist sphagnum, water, or airy aroid mix. Keep warm, bright-indirect, and humid; avoid direct sun. Pot up when roots reach 3–5 cm. Leaf-only cuttings fail; air-layer tall vines. Sterile tools help.
