About the Howea forsteriana

Howea forsteriana brings calm, coastal energy indoors. Think slender trunks, soft arching fronds, and instant ease. Howie does best in bright, indirect light and handles partial shade; keep him back from harsh sun or glass. Water deeply, drain well, then let the top layer dry—moist, never soggy.

Wipe fronds, rotate monthly, and let his silhouette do the talking. We send him snug in a sturdy, plant-safe box so he lands fresh, healthy, and ready to settle. Big presence, low drama—exactly the brief.

Did you know?

Kentias were the It-palms of Victorian parlours, prized because they stayed elegant in tough indoor conditions. Many lush “multi” plants are several seedlings grown together for volume while each trunk stays naturally solitary. Pet friendly, so he suits style lovers with curious companions. Place him a few metres from bright windows or behind sheer curtains for year-round poise. Keep drafts at bay, feed lightly in spring, and repot when roots crowd to keep growth steady indoors.

Why the living room?

This plant is perfect for the living room because it brings instant calm, and tropical charm with minimal effort. His soft, arching fronds make quite a striking statement, while gently freshening the air you breathe. Though he’s safe around curious pets & children, he’s ideal for stylish, lived-in spaces. Low-maintenance, air-cleansing, and full of presence—Howie was made for this room

Soil: Well-Draining

Choose a well-draining, airy palm mix so Howie’s roots stay oxygenated yet comfortably moist. Use premium potting soil boosted with chunky perlite, washed sand, and a touch of coco coir; a handful of fine bark adds structure. Avoid dense, peat-heavy blends and standing water. Let water flow through freely, then reset between drinks; damp, never dense, keeps fronds poised and growth steady.

Propagation: Seed

Propagate Howea forsteriana by SEED only. Use fresh seed: soak 24–48 hours, then sow 1–2 cm deep in a sterile, well-draining mix (coco coir + perlite). Keep warm at 25–30°C, bright-indirect, and evenly moist—not waterlogged. Germination is slow (months). Pot on when seedlings have 2–3 fronds. Do not divide clumps or take cuttings; they fail. Provide bottom heat and patience for success.

Bright, Indirect

Howie thrives in bright, indirect light and handles partial shade. Keep him metres from windows or behind sheer curtains; avoid harsh midday sun. More light, not heat, keeps fronds poised—rotate for balanced growth.

Moderate

Water when the top ~5 cm (2 in) of soil has dried. Give a deep drink, then drain thoroughly. Usually weekly in spring/summer, less in winter. Keep evenly moist, never soggy; use room-temperature water.

Novice

Howie is easy—bright, indirect light or partial shade, deep watering then drain, keep soil lightly moist. Avoid harsh sun, drafts, and soggy roots. Rotate and wipe fronds for steady growth.

Low

Howie prefers low to medium humidity—steady and comfortable, not muggy. Keep him away from heaters and blasting AC. Group with plants, use a pebble tray, or mist occasionally to keep fronds supple indoors.
