About the Schefflera Arboricola

The Schefflera Arboricola, or Dwarf Umbrella Tree, hails from the subtropical forests of Taiwan and southern China, where she stretches gracefully beneath the canopy. With her glossy, umbrella-like leaves and upright form, she brings tropical charm to any indoor space, making her a favourite for those who love greenery without the fuss.

Introduced to homes worldwide during the 20th century, this charming plant quickly earned a spot in stylish interiors thanks to her compact look and easy-going nature. With her air-purifying qualities and leafy presence, she’s both a design statement and wellness booster in one.

Today, Shelly (as we fondly call her) remains a top pick for anyone wanting to bring the tropics indoors. She prefers bright, indirect light, weekly watering, and the occasional leaf wipe to keep her gleaming. Lush, leafy, yet blissfully easy, just how we like her.

Did you know?

In the wild, Schefflera Arboricola often begins life as an epiphyte, growing on other trees—Shelly’s clearly got a rebellious side!

Why the living room?

Shelly is perfect for the living room because she brings lush, tropical charm with minimal effort. Her glossy, umbrella-like leaves create a striking focal point, while quietly purifying the air you breathe. Though she’s not safe for curious pets or children, she’s ideal for stylish, adult-friendly spaces. Low-maintenance, air-cleansing, and full of character, Shelly was made for this room.

Position: Floor

With her upright, tree-like form and potential to reach impressive heights indoors, Shelly is a natural floor plant. Pop her in a statement pot in the living room or bright corner where she can show off. Her lush, umbrella-like canopy makes a stunning focal point at floor level, she commands the room without trying. Keep her away from little hands and curious paws.

Growth Habit: Upright

Straight, strong stems that reach toward the ceiling.

Plant Care

Soil: Well-Draining

Shelly thrives in a well-draining potting mix that lets water flow freely through her roots without hanging about too long. A quality standard mix with added perlite is ideal, it opens up the soil for better airflow and prevents moisture from lingering. She’s not fussy, but soggy roots are her one nemesis. Keep things light, airy, and well-draining, and she’ll be perfectly content.

Propagation: Stem Cuttings

Shelly is best propagated through stem cuttings taken during the growing season. Snip a healthy stem just below a leaf node, remove the lower leaves, and pop it into water or moist soil with rooting hormone. Keep conditions warm and humid, and within a few weeks, roots will appear. Air layering is another reliable method for producing a more established new start.
